Descriptions

Senator of the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th term Senate. Deputy Marshal of the 9th term Senate (since 20 April 2017). Senior Marshal of the 11th term Senate. Born on 1 July 1939 in Łódź. In 1962, he graduated in law from the University of Łódź. He was awarded his doctoral (1969) and post-doctoral (1976) degree at the same university. In 1987, he was appointed an associate professor. He has been the full professor of the University of Łódź since 1990. He specialises in Polish and foreign labour law. He is the author of more than 190 academic publications, including a few dozen in foreign languages. In 1962-1965, he did his prosecutor training and worked at the Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź. Since 1969, he has been an academic teacher at the University of Łódź. He served as the Deputy Dean (1981-1984) and Dean (1984-1987) of the Faculty of Law and Administration, and later the Deputy Rector (1987-1990) and Rector (1990-1996) of that university. In 1994-2009, he headed the Chair of European Law. He also lectured at the University of Economics in Katowice (1997-2018) and was a guest at universities in France, Canada, Sweden, the UK, Switzerland, Spain and Japan. In 1997, he received a honorary doctorate from the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3. He was the Chair of the Conference of Polish University Rectors (1990-1996), member of the Legislation Council affiliated with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and the Pontifical Council for the Laity (1996-2006), the Honorary Consul of France in Łódź (1998-2005) and the President of the Government Labour Law Codification Commission (2003-2007). In 2005-2006, he was the Minister for Education and Science, and between 2006 and 2007, the Minister for Science and Higher Education. He has been sitting in the Senate since 2011 . He was the Deputy Marshal of the 9th term Senate and Senior Marshal of the 9th and 11th term Senate. In the 8th and 9th term Senate, he was the Chair, and in the 10th term the Deputy Chair of the Human Rights, Rule of Law and Petitions Committee. He is a member of domestic and foreign scientific associations. In 2009-2012, he was the President of the Association for Labour and Social Security Law. Since 2008, he has been serving as the Joint Chair of the Scientific Council of the Société historique et littéraire polonaise in Paris. He was decorated with multiple Polish and foreign orders, among them the following: the Knight’s Cross and Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, Commandeur dans l’Ordre national du Mérite, Ordre des Palmes académiques, Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Star, the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross, the “Sapentia et Veritas Distinguished Service for Science” Gold Medal, Honorary Badge for Meritorious Service to Legislation, and the Honorary Badge of the City of Łódź. He has no political party affiliation.
