Senator of the 8 th, 9 th and 10 th term Senate Deputy to the Sejm of the 4 th term Member of the European Parliament of the 6 th term He was born on 8 May 1960 in Kraków. In 1986, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Kraków, in 1987 – the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the Jagiellonian University, and later in 1995, earned a PhD in this faculty. Following his graduation, he worked as a physician in hospitals in Kraków. In the years 1990-1992, he was the Head of the Information Department at the Centre of Telewizja Polska in Kraków. Between 1993 and 1999, he was the Head of the International Centre for Democratic Development in Kraków, which was later transformed into the Strategic Studies Institute. In 1998 and 1999, he advised the Government Plenipotentiary for negotiations with the European Union. Since 1978, he was active in the democratic opposition, cooperating with the Student Committee of Solidarity. He was one of the founders of the Independent Students’ Association, and later its underground activist.Under martial law he was interned in Załęże. In the second half of the 1980s, he was a co-founder and an activist of the Freedom and Peace Movement. Between 1988 and 1990, he acted as editor-in-chief of the independent magazine ‘Tumult’. In the years 1999-2000, he served as the Deputy Minister of National Defence, and in 2007-2011 – Minister of National Defence. In the 4 th term Sejm, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the 6 th term of the European Parliament he chaired the Committee for Belarus. In the 8 th term Senate, he was Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Member of the Civic Platform party of Poland, also sitting on the National Council of this party.
