| Description | The vessel has been implicated in the transportation of goods to Port Kaliningrad on a weekly scheduled route. In June 2022, it delivered a consignment of goods (metal products) to the russian port of Kaliningrad, which Lithuania has prohibited from being transported by rail in transit. The vessel is owned and operated by the designated russian shipping company Northern Shipping Company OJSC (ОАО "Северное морское пароходство"), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Defence of the russian federation and provides services under state defence contracts for the transportation of cargo in the interests of the russian military. Northern Shipping Company OJSC is one of the largest shipping companies in north-west russia, engaged in global maritime transport, including along the Northern Sea Route. Its fleet consists of versatile dry cargo vessels capable of carrying all types of cargo, including radioactive and dangerous goods. The company operates 30 vessels of various types: 18 transport vessels, 7 dredging vessels, and 5 auxiliary vessels. It conducts liner, tramp, and multimodal shipping, delivers cargo to unequipped shores, tows various objects, provides technical management (repairs, supplies, ship chandling, warehousing), offers crew simulator training, corrects nautical charts, and supplies river-sea vessels with inland waterway navigation charts. In May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on Northern Shipping Company OJSC and 27 of its vessels, including Kholmogory, citing the company’s role in the russian military logistics sector, including the transportation of tanks and other military equipment for the russian armed forces. | [sources] | |||
