Seit 1976 Mitglied der JU und seit 1977 Mitglied der CDU. 1995 bis 2005 Vorsitzender des CDU-Kreisverbandes Heilbronn. 2001 bis 2011 stellvertretender Vorsitzender des CDU-Bezirksverbandes Nordwürttemberg. 2005 bis 2011 Generalsekretär, ab 2011 Landesvorsitzender der CDU Baden-Württemberg. Ab 2012 stellvertretender Vorsitzender der CDU Deutschlands. 1998 bis 2016 Mitglied des Deutschen Bundestages. 2016 bis 2021 Stellvertreter des Ministerpräsidenten und Minister für Inneres, Digitalisierung und Migration, seit 12.05.2021 Stellvertreter des Ministerpräsidenten und Minister des Inneren, für Digitalisierung und Kommunen des Landes Baden-Württemberg.
