Participó como invitada en la Primera Conferencia y al 7mo. y 8vo. Congresos del Partido. Diputada en la VIII y IX legislaturas, integró la Comisión redactora del Código de las Familias. Preside la Comisión Nacional de Atención Integral a Personas Transexuales del MINSAP. Es Titular de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba y Profesora e Investigadora Titular de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana. Posee la Orden Carlos J. Finlay, el Premio Anual de Salud y el Premio Nacional de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba. Fue propuesta como precandidata a diputada por los plenos de las 6 organizaciones de masas y estudiantiles.
