Chatterjee and other eminent leaders under the Preventive Detention Act; and released under the orders of the Supereme Court; spent six months in Jail for Satyagrah to make Jammu & Kashmir an integral part of India; narrowly escaped a bullet in police firing in the cow protection campaign in 1966 and was kept in jail for fifteen days; arrested during Emergency and detained for 19 months in jails in Delhi, Ambala, Chandigarh and Hissar; and had to be admitted in the PGI Medical Institute, Chandigarh; participated in active protests for the causes of general public, workers, scheduled castes, traders, teachers, government servants and deprived classes on more than 200 occasions and was jailed many times
