Vessel:descriptionThe vessel can carry any kind of lumber, logs, bulk grain, Class A and Class C cargoes, and general cargo, except for cargo subject to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. The vessel is owned and operated by the designated russian shipping company OJSC Northern Shipping Company (ОАО "Северное морское пароходство"), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Defence of the russian federation and provides services under state defense contracts for the transportation of goods for the benefit of the Ministry of Defence of the russian federation. It is one of the largest shipping companies in northwestern russia, engaged in global shipping, including operations along the Northern Sea Route. The company’s fleet consists of versatile dry cargo vessels that transport all types of cargo, including radioactive and dangerous goods. It comprises 30 vessels of various types: 18 in the transport fleet, 7 in the dredging fleet, and 5 in the auxiliary fleet. The company carries out liner, tramp, and multimodal shipping, delivers cargo to non-equipped shore facilities, tows various structures, provides technical management services (repair, supply, ship chandling, and warehousing), conducts crew simulator training, performs nautical chart corrections, and supplies mixed-navigation (river–sea) vessels with inland waterway navigation charts. In May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on OJSC Northern Shipping Company and 27 of its vessels, including the Mekhanik Pyatlin, due to their involvement in the military logistics sector of the russian federation, transporting tanks and other military equipment for the russian armed forces. Since October 2022, the vessel has been operating on the St. Petersburg–Kaliningrad route to transport goods prohibited for rail transit by Lithuania.ua_war_sanctionsua-ws-vessel-120
