The Military Housing Establishment was founded in 1975 with the purpose of securing adequate housing for Syrian military personnel. However, the Military Housing Establishment soon surpassed this role, becoming an institution with construction, industrial, and agricultural activities implementing many prominent and large-scale development projects. For three decades, the Establishment was overseen by Riad Shalish, cousin of Bashar al-Assad and brother of Dhu al-Himma Shalish. The Military Housing Establishment is on both US and EU sanctions lists.
