Haswani is a Syrian-Russian dual national, and he has been subject to sanctions from both the US and the EU due to his role as a mediator between the Syrian regime and the Islamic State. Some reports link George Haswani to the shipment of ammonium nitrates that led to the disaster of the Beirut Port explosion in 2020, and he also played a role in financing the militia Qalamoun Shield Forces. George Haswani has been under US sanctions since 25 November 2015, and was listed on EU sanctions on 7 March 2015.
