Maher al-Assad is a general in the Syrian Arab Army. He studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Damascus then joined the military school, where he graduated as first lieutenant and chief engineer. He is the commander of the Fourth Armored Division, formerly a component of the Defense Companies, which had been stationed on the Beirut-Damascus highway. Maher is also a member of the Socialist Arab Baath Party’s Central Committee. Bashar al-Assad relieved Maher of his command of the Republican Guard in 2017. In June of that year a decision was made to promote Maher from the rank of brigadier general to major general. He was the de facto commander of Fourth Armored Division of the Syrian Arab Army until April of 2018, when he was formally appointed as commander of the Division. US sanctions were imposed on Maher al-Assad on 29 April 2011, and EU sanctions were imposed on 9 May 2011.

ضابط برتبة لواء ركن في الجيش العربي السوري. بعد نيله للشهادة الثانوية درس الهندسة الميكانيكية في جامعة دمشق، وبعد تخرجه التحق بالكلية الحربية وتخرج منها برتبة ملازم أول مهندس قيادي. وهو قائد الفرقة الرابعة دبابات أي سرايا الدفاع سابقًا المتمركزة في معضمية الشام وأوتوستراد بيروت–دمشق وعضو اللجنة المركزية لحزب البعث العربي الاشتراكي. عزله بشار الأسد من قيادة الحرس الجمهوري في ٢٠١٧. صدر في يونيو 2017 قرار بترقية ماهر الأسد من رتبة عميد ركن إلى لواء ركن في الجيش. كان القائد غير الرسمي للفرقة الرابعة حتى شهر نيسان من عام 2018 حيث عُين قائداً للفرقة الرابعة دبابات في الجيش السوري. فرضت عليه العقوبات الأمريكية في 29/04/2011. فرضت عليه العقوبات الأوروبية في 09/05/2011 شملته العقوبات البريطانيه في 26/03/2012
