4th Armored Division

The 4th Armored Division is the most prominent unit of the Syrian Arab Army. It receives special training and enjoys privileged support, making it the strategic reserve of the Syrian regime. The establishment of the Fourth Division, which falls under the First Corps, dates back to the era of Hafez al-Assad. It was founded by Hafez’s brother Rifaat al-Assad, who had been the head of the Defense Companies which were responsible for massacres in Hama in 1982 and were later incorporated into the 4th Division after Rifaat al-Assad was sidelined in 1984. Its personnel, according to French media reports, are numbered at around 15,000 fighters. It consists of several regiments and brigades that are stationed at the entrances to Damascus. The 4th Armored Division is accused of committing several massacres and war crimes against the Syrian civilian population since the outbreak of the uprising in March 2011.

الفرقة الرابعة المدرعة أو الفرقة الرابعة دبابات. فرقة من فرق الجيش السوري تأسست على يد رفعت الأسد، وقد تمتعت هذه الفرقة بتدريبات خاصة وبدعم خاص لجعلها أقوى وأخطر فرق الجيش السوري وصرف عليها الكثير من الأموال لتكون حامية لسوريا. فرقة من فرق الجيش السوري تتبع الفيلق الأول. تمتعت هذه الفرقة بتدريبات خاصة وبدعم خاص لجعلها الاحتياط الاستراتيجي للنظام. يعود تأسيس الفرقة الرابعة إلى عهد حافظ الأسد، حيثُ أسسها شقيقه رفعت الأسد الذي كان يقود "سرايا الدفاع" المسؤولة عن مجازر مدينة حماة عام 1982، ثم أدمجت تلك السرايا في الفرقة الرابعة بعد إبعاد رفعت الأسد عام 1984. يصل عدد أفراد الفرقة حسب مصادر إعلامية فرنسية إلى 15 ألف مقاتل. تتكون من عدة أفواج وألوية اتخذت من مداخل دمشق مقرات لها. بحسب مركز جسور البحثي فهي ضالعة في تجارة المخدرات وتصدير حبوب الكبتاغون وأحد تجليات ذلك تعاونها مع معمل دوير الشوا
