He is an influential member of the Makhlouf family and closely connected to the Assad family; cousin of President Bashar al-Assad. Ihab Makhlouf is the twin brother of Iyad Makhlouf. He is the vice chairman of Syriatel’s board of directors, and the acting director of a company owned by Rami Makhlouf based in the United States. The European Union imposed sanctions on Ihab Makhlouf for financing the Assad regime and enabling violence against protesters in the Syrian uprising. There is information about Mahlouf that we believe to be inaccurate and is yet to be confirmed, namely that he is responsible for the sniper unit used to shoot Syrian protesters during the uprising.
