Ghassan Jaoudat Ismail

Former Head of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Service under the former al-Assad regime. Former deputy director of the Air Force Intelligence Service and previously in charge of the missions branch of the Air Force Intelligence Service which, in cooperation with the special operations branch, manages the elite troops of the Air Force Intelligence Service, who play an important role in the repression conducted by the former al-Assad regime. As such, Ghassan Jaoudat Ismail is one of the top military leaders directly implementing the violent repression of opponents conducted by the former al-Assad regime as well as practices of disappearance of civilians.

Ancien chef du service de renseignement de l’armée de l’air syrienne sous l’ancien régime d’al-Assad. Ancien directeur adjoint du service de renseignement de l’armée de l’air, chargé auparavant de la branche des missions du service de renseignement de l’armée de l’air qui gère, en coopération avec la branche des opérations spéciales, les troupes d’élites du service de renseignement de l’armée de l’air, qui jouent un rôle important dans la répression exercée par l’ancien régime d’al-Assad. À ce titre, Ghassan Jaoudat Ismail est l’un des principaux responsables militaires qui mettent en œuvre directement la répression menée par l’ancien régime d’al-Assad contre les opposants et participent à la disparition de civils.

Ghassan Ismail has been the current Director of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Directorate since 7 July 2019, succeeding Jamil Hasan. He held the position of Deputy Director of the same Directorate. He had also worked in the State Security branch of Sweida in 2016 and as the Head of the Special Tasks Branch (Air Force) in 2011. His brothers are Ammar (the opposition arrested and killed him), Ziad (who fought with the Shabiha and was killed), and Samer (a Judge in the terrorism court). Ismail was sanctioned by the UK on 15 November 2011, the EU on 24 July 2012 and the US on 9 November 2020.
