Bashar Hafez al-Assad is the President of the Syrian Arab Republic and the son of former President Hafez al-Assad. Following the death of his father in 2000, he assumed office after amending the Syrian Constitution to lower the minimum age of the President and a sham public referendum. At the same time, he has been the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Arab Army and Armed Forces since 2000 and the Secretary-General of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, which has ruled the country since 1963. Before entering politics, he was training as an ophthalmologist in London, before he returned to Damascus in 1994 following the death of his brother Bassel al-Assad in a car accident.
